District Eight Congressman Robin Hayes hosted an old fashioned weenie roast this past Friday evening,
June 10th at the Hoffman Volunteer Fire Department. The event was designed as a local level meet and greet, where
Congressman Hayes could visit with citizens from the Richmond County community, while also introducing new members of his
office staff.
Addressing the mostly Republican crowd that also included many Democrats, Congressman Hayes covered
several issues concerning America today from stem cell research and trade to illegal immigration and fighting terrorism.
“I will vote against CAFTA as it is currently,” Hayes said, referring to the trade proposal
with Central America. He then turned to illegal immigration, “We [America] must stop illegal immigration at our border.”
His down-to-Earth manner matched the assembled crowd as he graciously answered questions.
“It’s good to know that someone like Congressman Hayes recognizes us and chose the fire
station to host this event,” Hoffman Volunteer Fire Department Chief and Richmond County Communications Director Frank
McKay said. “Hoffman is often overlooked when these things are organized, so Congressman Hayes is proving he’s
in touch with the smaller communities, which is hard to find in politicians these days.”
Several community and business leaders were among the crowd of county residents who attended. The list
included Hoffman Town Councilman Barry Bostick, Richmond County GOP Executive Committee members, Teressa Beavers, Lee P. Butler
and Keith Mclester, Board of Election’s Judge Tom McInnis, Pam Easterling from the Board of Education, Steve Earwood
of the Rockingham Dragway, and members of the Executive Commitee from the Scotland County GOP.
