2007 Eighth District Convention Held at the Stanly County Commons

Several Richmond County Republicans attended the Eighth District 2007 Republican Party Convention held at the Stanly County Commons in Albemarle where United States Eighth District Congressman Robin Hayes was the guest speaker along with several candidates vying for state wide offices.

As delegates and guests at the convention, these Republicans gathered to take part in one of the most important aspects of the political process. It is at these grassroots level conventions where the voting constituency gets the most access and has the most viable opportunity to have a direct impact on policies and leadership in politics.

Among the important tasks addressed at the Eighth District Convention, attendees adopted the State Plan of Organization for the district and approved the rules, credentials, and treasury reports, along with the election of the State /executive Committee delegates.

Richmond County GOP 1st Vice-Chairman Jane Moss who was a member of the District Nomination Committee helped select the candidates for election to the Eighth District Executive Committee, all of whom were elected unanimously.

“The future of the country, our economy, our families is at stake,” United States Congressman Robin Hayes told the convention crowd. Congressman Hayes pointed out that with the new Congress, American working families will now face, “The largest tax increase in history and that tax increase will affect everyone, including married couples, people with retirement accounts, families dealing with the death of a loved one, and even those with low-incomes.”

He also addressed the issue of the current tactic termed the ‘slow-bleed’ where instead of giving the members of Congress an opportunity for an up-or-down vote, they gradually reduce funding for the military. Congressman Hayes ended by thanking all the district chairmen, calling out Richmond County GOP Chairman Teressa Beavers for her accomplishments.

“It is a tremendous honor to represent everyone in the Eighth District,” Congressman Hayes ended to a standing ovation, while thanking everybody for their support.

Other candidates who also spoke were Marcus Kindley for North Carolina Republican Party Chairman and his opponent, current Chairman Linda Daves, who was represented by her husband, Bill Daughtridge running for Republican representative to be State Treasurer and Dale Falwell, who was represented by state legislator Dave Almond, and John Barker running for Vice-Chairman North Carolina GOP.

The Richmond County GOP, who had more delegates and members-at-large than Mecklenburg County at the convention, saw both 2nd Vice-Chairman Lee P. Butler and Cheri Fisher selected as at-large board members for the district.

As a member of the North Carolina Republican Party Resolutions Committee, Vice-Chairman Butler presented a resolution he had written for acceptance by the district to be submitted for possible adoption by the Republican Party at the state convention in June titled, “Resolution Opposing Democrat Raiding Of The Highway Trust Fund.”

That resolution and the “Dennis McCollum Resolution” recognizing the greatly admired late Republican leader were adopted unanimously by the delegation.

Reverend Jim Bention Vice-Chairman of the Union County GOP addressed the crowd about his new ad-hoc committee designed towards minority community outreach by the Republican Party.

As an African-American he stressed the need for the Republican Party to educate more people in minority communities about the important role Republicans played in not only ending slavery, but the Republican struggle to give minorities and women equal rights against the machinations of Democrats throughout American history.

Before the ending of ceremonies, RCGOP Chairman Teressa Beavers was recognized and spoke passionately about the positive ruling of the United States Supreme Court in upholding the ban on the vile procedure termed partial-birth abortion.
