Don’t blame Bush

Jim Webb

I was just reading the Dec. 21 letter from Mr. Jeffery Stewart. I would like to ask him if he spent time in the Armed Forces. If he had, he would know you can’t just pull out of a war. If America pulls out of the war, the war will just follow Americans home.

There has to be a plan to end the war, not just quit. I don’t want my grandchildren to worry about a war on our land. Also I would like to ask Mr. Stewart if he votes in all elections? If not, he needs too.

We needed to stop the first time we went there, but we didn’t and that’s what we are facing now. We were there two times before and didn’t complete it, and it just got worse.

So don’t blame Mr. Bush, it was there before he went into office. In fact, he can’t blame Clinton or Bush Sr. either. I do have one thing to say that we don’t have to worry about WMDs there. That itself is worth the war. I have been in the military and went through the Nam era. We don’t need another war like that again. It made America weak, and that’s why we are having problems with China, too.

Hayes deserves congratulations

Deborah Thomas

This letter is being rendered on behalf of Congressman Robing Hayes and his steady, non-stop effort and support for his district and its constituents and issues.

Two weeks prior to the 2006 midterm elections, CNN news ran a week-long series of segments one of which was titled incorrectly, “The Do Nothing Congress.”

CNN attacked our Republican leadership in Congress and tried to lead the general public into believing that is was common for Republican legislators to spend only minimum time in Washington while wasting away and “going to sleep” when Congress is not in session. These accusations were not based totally on factual data.

Lynn Cheney had the fortitude to challenge these false accusations by debating Wolf Blitzer on CNN. I can cite Robin Hayes as our example of a Congressman who has put in maximum time and not idled away precious time away from Washington. Congressman Hayes is constantly working his district. He always comes when called to meet with his people on any issue at hand. Whether one agrees with his philosophy or not, give him credit for performing the job he has been elected to do for us.

I also wish to salute Teressa Beavers for her observation concerning Congressman Hayes’ final victory clarification. I also was puzzled by the headline placing Kissell in prominence the morning after his concession to Hayes. Robin Hayes is the Eighth District winner. His steady, determined leadership has once again led him to victory even though ever so close!

Congratulations are in order for our winner, Robin Hayes.

Error won’t effect history

Bonnie Wheeler

An error (not misrepresentation) in the letter written by Lee Butler will not have the earth-shattering negative effect on history that was portrayed in a recent letter to the Daily Journal by Mr. Henry Lovely.

Contrary to Mr. Lovely, the error does not, in any way, diminish the abilities of Mr. Butler to serve as town councilman, nor will it affect history.

President Roosevelt, Democrat, was indeed the first to appoint a woman, Frances Perkins, as Secretary of Labor. However, she would never be allowed that position by the Democrats in Washington today.

The first words of Ms. Perkins after being appointed by Roosevelt was “I came to Washington to work for God, FDR, and the millions of forgotten, plain common workingmen.”

Note the order in which she listed these. God came first. Can you imagine this lady being accepted as Secretary of Labor by current Democrats? She would be labeled a “Bible-thumper” and despite her expertise in the field, she would be unanimously voted down.

Similarly, President Bush nominated Janice Rogers Brown for federal Appellate Court Judge and because of her religious background, Democrats fought the nomination for two years.

Although Republicans did not appoint the first woman, nevertheless, it was Republican’s “firsts” that had the most positive impact on America.

Republicans were responsible for the freeing the slaves, passing the civil rights bill (with 80 percent of the vote in comparison to the Democrats 61 percent), and bringing down the Berlin Wall.

When Mr. Lovely engages the help of Google or other search engines in his effort to find a contradiction to the statements in this commentary; he will find that Democrats are finding it very difficult to give Ronald Reagan credit for bringing down the wall, however the search will prove that Reagan was responsible.

Labelling People Racists To Justify Something That Can't Be Justified

Barbara Leviner Jackson

I laughed out loud at your characterization of Ms. Strong's Letter To The Editor, "Democrats Have Grown Better With Age".

Becoming the party of abortion on demand, gay marriage and the removal of references to God from the public square is indeed not growth and certainly not noble.

While Ms Strong whines about Mr. Goodwin's restriction to 300 words in his letter, Mr. Butler is also held to that restriction. Ms. Strong seems to feel that if a democrat switches to republican, they are racist and that the Republican Party is racist.

My how easily and quickly that word comes to justify something that can't be justified. The fact is that the Republican Party was created for the express purpose of ending slavery and they did that.

But the Black Community stabbed the party that freed them in the back in order to get something for just being black, Affirmative Action.  What indeed is more racist than that?  Perhaps she needs to check her history.

The JOURNAL Chose to Restrict the Voice of the People Prior to the Elections

Barbara Leviner Jackson

Dear Madam Editor;

On October 25th, I sent a letter to the DAILY JOURNAL apologizing for my error of data in a letter printed earlier in the paper regarding Rep. Melanie Goodwin.

After a week of having not seen my apology in print, I emailed Madam Editor to inquire as to why it wasn't published, only to be told that the JOURNAL was not printing any letters regarding candidates prior to the election; this on November 2, five days before election.

Additionally, our US Senator, Elizabeth Dole and our US Congressman, Robin Hayes was here in Hamlet at the Cole Auditorium on November 6.  Not a word of that upcoming event was printed on the paper's Community Calender and they certainly knew of the event;

I would have thought that even some democrats would have liked an opportunity to speak to or ask questions of our Federal representatives; and indeed they were kind enough to take time with all of us there; but no, the JOURNAL just could not bring themselves to offer that bit of freedom of the press to its local citzens.  What kind of shinola is that!

One writer to the editor stated that she felt uninformed about our local candidates running for various offices;  noted above are some of the reasons why she felt that way.

I've learned alot about our county by reading letters to the editor from our citizens,  yet the JOURNAL chose to restrict the voice of the people prior to the elections, surely their way of influencing the vote.

What the hell kind of newspaper is that!

Democrats never lower taxes

Robert D. Sanford

Editor,

I had written a letter giving some very disturbing facts about some of our democratic presidents, but decided against sending it.

After reading Mrs. Beavers’ commentary Nov. 5 and agreeing totally with it and Mr. Goodwin’s which I totally disagree with, I thought I would at least set one of them straight about presidential history.

Guess who the first Republican President was? If you said Abraham Lincoln, you win.

Don’t get me wrong. I wish he had been a Democrat.

I challenge Mr. Goodwin to read Mr. Thomas E. Woody Jr., Ph.D.’s book “The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History,” and see if he will still be so proud of his party.

Since when has a Democrat ever lowered taxes for anyone. The facts are that like Gov. Easley they tax, tax and tax to give to their base groups. And, just when did a Democrat ever lower taxes on gas?

Taxes are so high in this state that in one year over $2 billion surplus was taken in and then spent immediately. N.C. license fees, as well as other state fees, have gone up dramatically. I keep being told my county taxes are decreasing, but for some reason I now pay over $300 more per year. Oh, I get it all right. The people who run our government are very smart. Lower the tax rate by 5 cents on the dollar, but reevaluate homes by 35 percent and stupid residents will believe us when we say we’ve lowered taxes but now your house is worth more. Yeah right!

By the way folks, read John chapter 13 and see who Jesus commanded to love, and for what reason.

A Letter To Nancy Pelosi

Donna D. Lane

Dear Ms. Pelosi:

I would like to congratulate you on your recent accomplishments:

1. Becoming Speaker of the House

2. Getting your Botox treatments prior to the Nov 7th election date.

3. Skating your "real agenda" with Wolf in your CNN interview. You did a great Job! You covered up your real agenda with the "grace and Southern charm of Hillary Clinton"!!!!!

As a woman I am disgusted and frustrated that you will represent the women of America with your "Over-The-Top Liberal, San Francisco views" I love San Francisco and love to visit there. But I do not want the general views of that area to govern my nation.

Why can we not have a graceful woman like Elizabeth Dole to take the Speaker of the House position? Please understand, I am now a female business owner, and prior to that I was a female company executive in a generally male dominated world....so I know where of I speak.

If I had come across like you, I would have been out of a job 5 years prior to when the textile company laid me off due to "not needing my skills because they were more than the textile company needed". I applaud you for getting "fixed-up" for the big "Power Take Over" and being so "soft" during Wolf's interview. But it did not "spin" with me.

Especially since you had to interject your upcoming due date of your Grandchild. Don't get me wrong, I wish the best for the delivery and the health of the child. But that does not excuse your EXTREMELY LIBERAL POLITICS and embarrassment I feel for your representation of our Country. How would you feel if that grandchild was a subject of "Partial Birth Abortion" in which you are in favor of???

George Bush may not be totally correct on all issues facing our country (as are many of our voted leaders).....but he does not embarrass us. Your outspoken liberal "put-downs" [except when you choose to back-off and act like Scarlett at the Tara Plantation when you won] literally make me want to never vote again and especially for another woman!

But that would not accomplish anything for our country. Listening to you and our local in state Representive Melanie Goodwin makes me want to run for office myself. I feel I have a better handle on our country, county and state than either of you.

I am sorry that I could not write you a positive letter to say congratulations, but after tossing and turning, walking and not sleeping last night I just could not. When I saw the Wolf interview I just about threw-up, and it just put me over the top of the whole subject.

All that stood out was the obvious Botox you had performed between the Oct 22nd interviews and yesterday and your "Scarlet-like speech". I hope something comes over you to change the hard and "bitch-like-- Get George Bush" attitude I have watched you display over the last 12 months.

You could be a great representation of women getting ahead and our country if you just re-thought how you come across and your hard liberal views. I hope to write you in the future to thank you for your changes and becoming more of a "real person" not just a "gotta-get-em" politician.

Thank you for reading this.

I would appreciate a response if you care to give one.

Barbara Jackson Apologizes To Democrats As Only She Can

Barbara Leviner Jackson

I would like to offer my deepest apology to Rep. Malanie Wade Goodwin.  I'm truely sorry that I stated incorrect data regarding the gas tax in my last letter to the editor and indeed more sorry that her voting record on taxes is so poor. I am very sorry if that error caused her any problems in her campaign.

I can't imagine that it has; although most democrats in this area do not subscribe to the democrat's philosophy of abortion on demand, gay marriage, redistribution of income and the removal "God" from the public square, I'm sorry to say that they will still go and perpetuate these philosophies via their vote mostly because their familes have always done so.

I'm sorry that most Washington democrats have voted against the Patriot Act, against tough interrogation measures for terrorist and against warrantless surveillance of suspected terrorist. The Democrats will next want the Miranda read to terrorist on the battlefield!

I would be extremely sorry if the Democrats won The House; Nancy Pelosi would then be speaker and free to inflict her San Francisco liberalism on all of us; Charlie Rangle would be the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, that which determines taxes; he and Pelosi both have already said that they would do away with the tax cuts granted us by the Bush Administration.

Additionally, I'm really sorry that the Richmond County democrats don't have their own party headquaters except in Wayne Goodwin's office. And how much are they paying for that?

Further the Republican Party does not owe the Democrats an apology. I am not on the Republican Party Executive Committee nor do I confer with them either before or after I write a letter to the editor.

When I trashed our Rep. and talked some stuff about the petty and mean spirited complaint of the Democratic Executive Committee, that was all me and except for the sentence I'm apologizing for, I meant every word!

Thank You

Jackson did Goodwin a favor, Goodwin's record shows more tax increases

Robert R. Russell

No Rep. Melanie Goodwin didn’t “vote” to raise the gas tax, democrats already had an automatic gas tax adjustment in place that would “recalibrate” the gas tax twice a year based on the price of gasoline. In January, the tax rate increased 2.8 cents per gallon, the largest increase in 16 years.

As the second increase was nearing, Goodwin and her democrat buddies ignored republican calls for not only a “cap” on the gas tax, but also a reduction in the rate from 29.9 cents (double all neighboring states’ taxes and fifth highest in the United States!) to the 2004 level of 26.6 cents.

Only after Republicans kept the heat on “tax hike loving” Democrats by creating Web sites; running radio, television and newspapers ads; and finally held a huge “Stop the Gas Hike” rally in Raleigh, did the democrats call a special “short” session? Did democrats “vote” to cap the gas tax? Of course, they didn’t bother to reduce the tax rate.

Representative Goodwin wants facts?

Here’s some facts: Goodwin and her Democrat buddies in Raleigh who control the House, Senate and governor’s position voted to raise taxes on almost everything working families in the state purchase, including televisions, candy, electricity, etc.

They passed the largest budget in the history of North Carolina, increasing spending 10 percent over last year and paid for it with a one time $2 million surplus, tax increase and by raiding the Highway Trust Fund!

Are you a smoker? Since Goodwin has taken office, she helped increase taxes on cigarettes from 30 to 35 cents per pack. Tax Hike Mike wants the rate to increase to 75 cents. Will Rep. Goodwin support that tax increase, too?

Seems Mrs. Jackson was doing Goodwin a favor, since her actual voting record proves she’s raised taxes way more than 16 cents!

Republicans Gaining Ground Makes Richmond County Democrat Act like A Spoiled Sport

Barbara Leviner Jackson

So just two days after seeing a picture in the paper of the Chairperson of the Republican Party, Teresa Beavers presenting a US flag at the Hoffman School, the Chairman of the Democratic Party faxes a complaint against the Republican Party from his law office to the State Election Board and of course to the Daily Journal.

It is my understanding that the complaint came into the Journal's office at approximately 1:00PM on Friday.  The article in the paper stated "The Republican Party did not receive a copy of the Democratic Party's questions until shortly before press time."  What made this complaint so important that the Journal could not have waited for answers from the Republican Party? Why was it so important that it go to press by 4:00PM that same day?

But no, the Daily Journal had to run immediately to the presses and splatter their Liberal ink across the front pages of the paper as if the complaint was some huge scandal!   Did the Journal speak with the Chairman of the Democratic party prior to the fax being received and  conspire on the timing, to have the story out on Saturday, so the potential dirt could sink in to the voters over the weekend; a political dirty trick.

Since Mr. Wayne Goodwin the Democratic Party chairman in Richmond County knew about the GOP being in their headquarters since January, why did Mr. Goodwin wait until now at election time to complain?

Mr. Goodwin decried the GOP sign; heck, I've got a pair of shoes that cost more than the sign!  He moaned about the advertisements "from this year published in the Daily Journal"?  Well why didn't the Journal just pick up the phone and call up to their own ad department and ask how much the Republicans had spent and at the same time discover how much the Democrats had spent?

I assure you that I have a purse that cost more than those ads!  Now, to the Web site; it's handled by a dedicated and very capable Republican, Lee Butler.

He does it all!

The phone bank; I laughed out loud about that one!  The phone was only recently put in!

The GOP phone bank is done from the homes of citizens that love their country and want to see it protected from the liberal agenda!  Unlike the democrats, as demonstrated by our own representative Mrs. Wayne Goodwin's vote to raise the gas tax by sixteen cent a gallon. Republicans traditionally can do more with less money and would have never voted to raise that tax, especially at a time when the price of gas is so high.

Just because the Republicans are gaining ground in Richmond County, have a party headquarters, an outstanding web site and have motivated people in the party that would like to see Richmond County change for the better instead of maintaining with the old guard, is not reason enough for a former representative to behave like a spoiled sport and concoct frivolous grievances.

Will we see the Republican response on the front page of the newspaper in the same bold font?

NOT HARDLY!

Wake up, America; support our president

Wayne Simmons

It amazes me that we still have American people who think we should just leave Iraq.

I think we owe the almost 3,000 soldiers who have given their lives for us, and I would hope the majority of Americans feel the same.

What have we seen in the last few weeks?

Well, first we saw that the United Nations allow the president of Iran to speak and make a joke out of the so-called world government. Then it allowed Hugo Chavez to speak and call our president the devil, and also make a joke out of the UN.

Then we saw the pope tell the truth about Islamic terrorists and be made to apologize. Then we saw the leader of Hezbollah say the two Israeli soldiers would not be released and Hezbollah would not lay down its weapons.

My question is this: What more do the American people need to see to realize what we are up against here? We are up against a group of people who claim Islam is a peaceful religion, but they want to wipe Israel off the map. And they want to kill Americans!

By the way, for all the people who keep saying we should not have went to war with Iraq, I guess we should have just let Saddam’s sons keep raping and murdering little girls and killing innocent Iraqi citizens.

Congressman Hayes Has Performed Yeoman's Duty For District 8

There are several flaws with Ron Murray Sr.’s attack letter on District eight Representative Congressman Robin Hayes.

Mr. Murray seemed upset that the article was ‘long on praise’ about the fact that Congressman Hayes is responsible for the possible 2007 opening of a VA clinic here. What other congressman can say they were responsible for working to make that event happen?

Mr. Murray obviously doesn’t care that with Congressman Hayes’ help the VA clinic is proposed to be located in Richmond County out of all the counties in the district.

How quickly does anyone truly think it takes to make the slow grinding wheels of government turn faster? Especially for a congressman who has worked to build prominence allowing him to be in a position to makes things happen to benefit the people of his district.

Congressman Hayes has done more in eight years for Richmond County than any congressman who served before him and possibly all of them combined!

Trying to compare what South Carolina has gotten politically to what North Carolina has makes no sense. The size of a state doesn’t dictate the allocation of funding approved for projects such as VA clinics and a representative’s tenure does have much to say about who gets that funding.

Congressman Hayes only represents the Eighth district, not all of North Carolina, so for the state’s veterans to be underserved means there have been many years of failed congressional support coming from elected representatives long before Congressman Hayes was ever elected to office.

It would appear that our representative has performed a yeoman’s duty in his eight short years in Washington D.C., specifically for Richmond County, a county he could have ignored as his predecessors had, but chose not to.

It seems Mr. Murray’s politically colored glasses are clouding his ability to think clearly.

What’s the secret formula, Mr. Murray?

Editor,

In a recent letter to the editor, Ron Murray Sr. said U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes (R-NC8) first promised the VA clinic eight years ago and only gives attention to it when he’s running for re-election.

I wholeheartedly disagree.

Hayes has worked diligently on this project and numerous others in Richmond County since first being elected to office.

In the same issue of the Daily Journal, County Commission Chairman Ken Robinette said a lot of what is happening today (with economic development) was from groundwork laid down 10 years ago.

If Mr. Murray has his own secret formula for making the wheels turn faster, perhaps he will share it with all of us.

Democrats Failed To Pass The Minimum Wage For Political Expedience

Barbara Leviner Jackson

The Daily Journal, has mouthed the very same lame excuses for the failure to pass the minimum wage bill as the senate Democrats. I don't recall your telling the readers that all the senate democrats except one, Sen. Robert Byrd, voted against that bill!

It's pretty sorry when a party that claims to be the stalwart of the working poor votes against giving those same people a substantial raise and then uses the excuse that they didn't want the wealthy to be exempt from paying an additional tax upon their death.

Does any of the senate democrats really think that the working poor give a dang if the wealthy get a tax break as long as they can get a $2.00 an hour raise, $80.00  more a week, $320.00  more a month?

Understanding that the top 10% of the wealthy pay over 50% of the tax debt; they pay huge property and income taxes; they give the jobs, not the poor; the health benefits, stock options, leave time; it's primarily their money that supports the needed social services as well as the redundant give me, give me programs that democrats are so fond of; the wealthy donate the most money!

Generation after generation have worked to acheive an estate or business that they can pass on to their children; they pay taxes every year just like the rest of us but yet the democrats want them to pay more taxes when they die or  should I say, the children will have to pay; a substantial tax at that!

The American people have spoken on the Death Tax; they want it done away with!

But the democrats were able to use the excuse that the two issues were on the same bill, so therefore they could not support the bill as it is.  There is a much more sinister motive afoot here.  Just because we have a republican control congress does not mean that majority rules.

Again the Liberal Journal failed it's readers by not telling those that do not know that for the bill to pass in the senate, there must be 60 votes in favor; with all the republicans voting in favor and only one democrat, there was not enough votes to pass.

But because it is a republican controlled congress, the bill's failure can be blamed on the republicans.  The major point here is, had the minimum wage bill passed, the republican congress would have gotten credit for it and the democrats simply could not have that.

The working poor, are a causuality of their politics.  And just where was the Black Caucas? They were silent!  Had the republicans voted against raising the minimum wage, the Black Caucas would have been at every microphone yelling about it.  Oh, I forgot, they're democrats too! I entreat the Daily Journal to be more forthcoming in their editorializing endeavors. The fact is Mr. Editor, it was the democrats what done this bill in!

Annan must go; bring back draft

Mike Boylan

The United Nations needs to drop the very incompetent Kofi Annan.

The only thing he is good for is to disagree with the United States and our close allies. If it hadn’t been for Annan, we would have a lot more help in Iraq.

Saddam Hussein kept thumbing his nose at all the resolutions for more than a decade. George W. Bush had enough backbone to go into Iraq alone as Annan refused to help.

Now Annan is crying the blues wanting a cease-fire — probably to give Hezbollah and Hamas time to regroup. It’s unfortunate that so many civilians had to die, but remember Hezbollah started it and people were warned to evacuate those towns before Israel struck.

I pray for the Israeli army every day. I hope they can wipe Hezbollah out.

I know I have used some harsh words, but every time Hezbollah starts something with Israel, it comes down hard on the terrorists but they don’t seem to learn.

We don’t like to be at war as we have a grandson in the 82nd Airborne Division who has pulled a tour of duty in Afghanistan and two tours in Iraq. He may soon have to return to Iraq.

People don’t want to hear it, but we need the draft back. It would take some of the strain off the troops who have to go over time after time.

UN needs an immediate overhaul

Wayne Simmons

Let’s look at the United Nations, which is headed up by Kofi Annan. What exactly does he do?

He never sides with the United States or Israel on anything. He never holds any of the terrorist groups accountable for anything. The United Nations is a big waste of money for American taxpayers.

If we are going to have a so-called world government like the U.N., it needs an immediate overhaul. Then comes people like John Kerry and Howard Dean — what in the world are Democrats thinking having these two men speaking for their party?

Kerry says that if he were president, the Middle East conflict would not have happened. Dean says that if Democrats were in the White House, the Middle East conflict would not be happening. Kerry and Dean need to resign period.

These two men always seem to put politics first and everything else last. Israel is trying to do the job the U.N. refuses to do. Remember Resolution 1559?

Hezbollah has never been made to surrender its arms, why didn’t the U.N. pressure the Lebanese government to do what the resolution said? Just like Iraq; how many resolutions were passed against Saddam Hussein and nothing was ever done?

I am glad we have a president like George Bush who doesn’t mind doing what’s right. I hope Israel completes what it has started. Hezbollah, Hamas — these two terrorist groups need to be wiped out!

Come on, America, show your support for Israel. God bless the Israeli troops. God bless the American troops who are in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Minimum Wage Is An Election Year Ploy By Democrats

Robert Russell

We are seeing election year politics happening right here in the state of North Carolina where our state legislators are passing legislation in the hopes of turning it into campaign commercials for re-election.

Case in point, raising the minimum wage.

Democrats constantly beat the ‘raise the minimum wage’ drum because it’s ‘the right thing to do’ and anybody who doesn’t think so is just a cold-hearted hater of the poor and lover of the rich. They use this false scenario as a way to paint themselves as defenders of the poor while constantly browbeating the voting public with that self-fulfilling image.

The press helps them by providing free promotional coverage through biased news stories championing the liberal Democrat agenda while producing attack pieces covering issues supported by conservative Republicans.

The press reports that families can’t live on the money earned while making only minimum wage and how that yearly income is below the poverty level. One Democrat politician even announced that it wasn’t even enough money to pay her daycare bill!

It’s no wonder poll’s show a majority favoring the increase, wouldn’t you want a state mandated pay raise?

The reality is that only 3 percent of businesses still pay minimum wage rates and of the millions of people employed in the state the rate increase will only affect 140,000 of which most are teenagers. People who would try to raise a family on minimum wage have bigger problems going on.

Raising the minimum raise sounds good on paper, but is really just window dressing for politicians.

Why are Republicans attacked in the press for trying to protect the American flag which has majority support across the country as a campaign tactic, yet Democrats are lauded for an almost non-existent benefit that will probably do more harm economically than good just to get votes?

Some Should Preach In Their Own Back Yards About whom They 'Worship'!

Barbara Jackson

Having been raised in the good Laurel Hill Pentacostal Holiness Church, I can assure Cassandra Smith that I know the difference between God and President Bush.

Because of his strength, perservance and humanity, 50 million people are free and able to determine their own lives. Why would Ms. Smith scoff at and deny me the same admiration for President Bush she feels for Martin Luther King?

In addition, good Christians would not run to polls to vote for a party that supports abortion on demand, gay marriage and the suppression of God’s word! I suggest that when Ms. Smith feels the need to preach, she do it in her own back yard first.

Preschool teacher has a bad attitude

Barbara Jackson

What kind of so-called Christian would advocate killing the baby because its mother is worthless!

This is the worst thing I’ve ever heard — especially coming from a woman who claims to be a preschool teacher. Does she look at the little children and think, “Your mama should have aborted you?”

Why not hold the parents responsible?

With the kind of women Ms. Outen is talking about, all the abortion in the world is not going to change anything. We have plenty of that already and they won’t use it! They just simply don’t give a crap!

I can only hope Ms. Outen doesn’t work in Richmond County where she might inflict our children with her quite obviously disdainful attitude.

Bush Blamed For Problems Inherited From Former Administrations

As Ronald Reagan used to say, “Here we go again.”

George W. Bush is again being blamed for problems that began before he became president. The messes that Bush now has are those he inherited from former administrations.

It is impossible for the president to wave a magic wand and eliminate all the problems that began years ago. However, I agree immigration has gotten out of hand within the last 15 years. The Democrats and Republicans have refused to take action against the influx.

But let us keep in mind that our nation was founded by immigrants and we must allow others the same opportunity to come to America as those who have come before them. Nevertheless, we have the right to demand they enter legally and that they be scrutinized carefully, so as not to allow those to enter who would do harm to Americans.

Contrary to Ms Fields’ statement, not everyone will be glad when Bush retires. Many of us are glad that we had Bush for president during the tragedies that befell America for the first time in history.

I shudder to think what would have happened had Gore or Kerry been president during 9/11, or if these tragedies had occurred under the former administration.

Bonnie Wheeler

George W. Bush Will Never Allow Our Country To Be Broken

I felt compelled to respond to Mr. Richard Rushing's diatribe of May 11, 2006. First, just where in this country are those starving children Mr. Rushing wrote about? Certainly if our Social Services are aware of it, then the children will be given medical care and food provided for the home.

If after that time however, the child is malnourished, it's because his parents ain't from Shinola! Moreover I trust that Mr. Rushing will report those cases that he has knowledge of. Our economy is better than it was the year before the serial cheater left office and will soon reach an all time high DOW. 95.7% of Americans are working, so are the illegals; corporate earnings are up, assuring job security and our GDP is 4.8%; HUGH!

Yes, we're in debt but so is every country that's at war. Some think that because gas prices are high, that it's indicative of our economy; WRONG.

Heck, Europe pays $7.00 a gallon! It's all about supply and demand. India and China alone used more oil than the entire world did ten years ago. Exactly what corruption is Mr. Rushing referring to?

I don't recall his hue and cry when President Clinton rend asunder the very code of leading by example, by having fellatio performed on him while he was on the phone conducting the people's business within the hallowed walls of the Oval Office. His debauchery is a fact!

Our National Security is no mask. We have not experienced another attack in our country since 9/11; five years. And that's because our President and his Administration went on the offensive with the help of the Patriot Act. And with the majority of Americans supporting its continuance, recently most Democrats voted against it.

Because the Clinton Administration did nothing after the first trade center attack in 1993, the slaughter of our troops in Somalia, the bombing of our Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the attack on The Cole, all directly related to Bin Laden; our enemies see us a weak. His administration reduced the defense and CIA budget and neutered the intelligence gathering capabilities.

Pursuing our enemy takes money, lots of money; and I don't give a dang how much debt we go into as long as we go after and defeat those terrorist killers that threaten our way of life. Indeed, our country is not broken; we've never been broken and thanks to people like George Bush, we never will be.

President Bush Resign? That would be nuts!

First we had an admitted Democrat who was willing to say she was proud to have voted for a party that openly promotes the unrestricted destruction of innocent unborn babies.

She supports a party that fights for organizations such as the ACLU whose main agenda is the removal of anything religious; especially Christianity, from the public sector.

She is happy to advance a party that has never seen a tax increase they didn’t like and incessantly argues in favor of rights for terrorists.

How dare we monitor terrorists’ phone calls!

Then another obvious liberal decides it’s time for the President to resign because he thinks the government is in shambles?

Since when has there been an epidemic of children dying from malnutrition in this country?

Our children are not the least educated in the world, but do you somehow think they were more educated during the Nineties?

Here’s a nice little secret for you, when President Bush took office our economy didn’t have an ‘actual’ surplus. It had a ‘projected’ surplus. Like you have an ’actual’ surplus when you buy the scratch-off lottery ticket, and just like the ‘stock market bubble’ economy of the Nineties, after you scratch the surface off the ticket, the ‘projected’ reality hits home.

The statement that the current government is ‘for the few and by the few’ is a shared sentiment by liberal Democrats across the land and isn’t based anything substantive. It’s just how they feel.

The economy is great. The stock market is reaching an all-time high, the GDP is through the roof, manufacturing is at record levels, consumer confidence is solid, tax revenue collections are higher than they’ve ever been, home sales are up, unemployment is solidly low.

Are there problems? Sure, but nothing the President should resign over. That would be nuts!

The liberal movement of the Democratic party

Eoline Killough’s statement in “Democrats alive and well in Richmond” poses some longstanding questions for me, as a registered Democrat for more that 60 years, who in recent years readily admit to crossing party lines, due to the liberal movement of the Democratic party.

Ms. Killough’s comment that “it is as erroneous to think Democrats are opposed to prayer in the schools as it is to think that Christian fundamentalism is the religious arm of right-wing Republican politics” is troubling.

It is not their stated position that bothers me. It is their practice of marching in lock-step with the left-wing zealots, who for the most part have seized control of the Democratic party. I have never met a person who was not “for motherhood and against sin.”

Yet some of my friends who appear to adopt that posture, assume leadership roles in our community and churches, filling the pews on Sunday, then at election time go to the polls and blindly vote for a candidate, strictly on the basis of his political party and in so doing have supported, or silently stood by and allowed our Christian and fundamental American principles to be abandoned.

That is what bothers me!

Shame on local Democrats voting record: Are they hypocrites or just don't know what their party supports?

Why do democrats help plan the National Day of Prayer at the Courthouse, attend the service and yet vote against it? Do democrats just not know what their party stands for or are they just plain hypocrites?

What do people think will happen when the left arm of the Democratic Party, the ACLU, comes down here to sue the county for allowing prayer at the courthouse, a Gospel Choir at the high school or prayer and demonstration of religion at any school or agency function?

Has the school Christmas holidays been changed to Winter holidays yet? And when this does happen, the democrats in this county can thank themselves because they vote for the very lawmakers that support abortion on demand, gay marriage and the removal of any reference to God from the public square.

Shame on them!

Uniform Policy is a Joke, Let’s Work on Education

As I have said a thousand times, the uniform policy in Richmond County Schools is a joke.

The whole basis of its inception was the failure to enforce the previous dress code. We all saw right through the whole cheaper and no brand name arguments.

Now we have a new and more strict code that has been nothing less than controversial from the start.

Here is a thought for the school board: Let’s work on education for a change. For the parents, why don’t you unite, say no to the uniform policy and teach your children when authority goes too far.

I hate protesters and do not promote civil disobedience, but there is nothing wrong with a little revolt every once and a while.

He’s Offended; She’s Offended; Don’t You Want To Be Offended Too! (Full un-cut version)

Barbara Leviner Jackson

I'm not one to normally take up for Mr. Bacon. In fact, I'm usually gnawing on him for making me ill. But it never ceases to amaze me how quickly folks can jump on that "Woe is me; I'm black and I'm offended" bandwagon.

Bacon only asked if June Bug was a real name. Why would someone be offended over that? Hell I had cousins named Couter Bug and Bootie Gal.

Cute Huh?

How quickly the black community in Durham jumped on the racial thing; the Coach forced to leave, his career damaged; all the soccer teams games canceled; the team members threaten with death by local gang members, demonized and call all manner of racist. Now me know that there was absolutely no DNA of any team member on the lady, in the lady or on any of her property.

However we do know that the lady has been working an escort service for some time, that she was found guilty a few years ago of Larceny, DWI and assault on a Police officer. Many of the black leadership in Durham seemed absolutely crestfallen when the DNA report came back, they seem to want to play that race card no matter what.

And what of Congresswoman, Cynthia Mckinney of Georgia, who was stopped by Capitol Police when going into the Congressional Building because she did not have her ID on. The officer called for her to stop three times before he put his hand on her arm to stop her, only to be slapped by the congresswoman. And right away, the first thing out of her mouth was that the officer was a racist and she felt that the officer should have recognized her.

What arrogance!

Would that Mr. McCrae and others within the black community could show the same offense to a 75 percent illegitimacy rate, many children of whom will have little or no contact with their fathers; the 6 out of 10 young black men who drop out of school and become involved in criminality, more young men in prisons than in colleges across this country; low academic achievement scores, directly attributed to the illegitimacy, not to mention twice the abortions as whites.

I entreat Mr. McCrae to get his feelings off his shirt sleeves and roll them up instead and use his offense where it really counts most. When I was coming along, if I'd gotten offended every time someone said to me, "what are you!", then I'd still be offended!

Congressman Hayes Has Made Changes in the County

Editor,

The Daily Journal editorial board started out praising the people who had decided to get active in the Richmond County political scene, then something happened.

Somehow, instead of going more in depth on the issue and talking about the importance of having people take part in the political process, board members quickly morphed their editorial into another in a long line of petty diatribes against U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes (R-NC8).

Is that what we’re going to continue to get from the Daily Journal during the election season? A non-stop repeat of the same tired attack you obviously love to hear yourself say while lovingly embracing his opponent?

In the first place, the Daily Journal has already appointed Tim Dunn the Democrat representative without a primary election without a primary election having taken place. There are other Democrat candidates voters have to choose from before the Daily Journal can simply anoint the guy it’s drooling over.

In the second place, maybe the Daily Journal editorial board and Dunn can find the time to go on a publicity tour of the Burlington plant and other textile plants in the district that called Hayes to voice their support for CAFTA, and actually talk to those company representatives about their support of the deal you’re using as a political attack on Hayes.

The Daily Journal doesn’t seem to know about this fact, even though the newspaper ran stories covering the support these textile companies expressed.

Then maybe the editorial board could go to Dobbins Heights and talk to the mayor about the money Hayes secured for the town. Then take time to talk to Ed O’Neal about the V.A. clinic Hayes helped make possible in Richmond County since board members seem to think nothing has changed in the district.

Congressman Hayes Has Been Good For Richmond County

Editor,

The Daily Journal was rather generous with its criticism of U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes (R-NC8) for his flip-flop vote on the Central American Free Trade Agreement.

It also was implied that the reward promised Hayes by Speaker Hastert for his support had been an empty promise.

Hayes’ vote was only one of 217 that approved the measure and was no more significant than the other 216. Sadly, the plight of the textile industry, as we have known it, was doomed before Hayes went to Congress and since his family and business background is closely allied with the Cannon textile empire.

It is not logical that he would intentionally “shoot himself in the foot” over any textile issue.

As to empty promises, many of us remember the promises made by Hayes’ predecessor, Democratic Rep. Bill Hefner, whose promise of a propeller factory for our depressed area, grew to be expected every two years, but never materialized. One would be hard pressed to identify anything substantial Hefner ever did for Richmond County, yet he carried the county every election, once with a majority so great that he won the election — even though he lost virtually all the other counties in the district.

Hayes has accomplished more for the area in his four terms than Hefner did in more than 10.

The Veteran’s Care Center, recently announced by Hayes for Richmond County, appears destined to become a reality. That should provide a substantial boon to the area economy, as well as a richly deserved benefit and blessing to area veterans.

Without Hayes’ support and influence, it would not have been possible.

Since we are inclined to hang the textile debacle about his neck, do you suppose we could give him a little credit for one of the most positive things to happen here in a while?

Who knows — the federal money appropriated to build the Veterans Care Center just might have indirectly resulted from Hayes’ much-maligned CAFTA vote!

Liberals Blame Bush, While It's 'Fun, Fun, Fun at Mardi Gras'

Editor,

In response to President Bush being regarded as an emperor and treatment of African Americans by the lack of any coherent policy following Hurricane Katrina, what I would like to know is what plans New Orleans made in advance, knowing the city was in a bowl 12 feet below sea level.

Also, how is it that the mayor hauled buggy to Baton Rouge, deserting everyone from the beginning? Why did the governor wait three days before calling out the National Guard or requesting help from neighboring states?

Everything is George W. Bush’s fault.

He’s more than an emperor. He is the one who causes us to have hurricanes, a floundering economy, high gas prices, and I’m hoping he had nothing to do with this bird flu thing getting started.

The mayor there should be looking out for the citizens instead of having fun, fun, fun at Mardi Gras.

Using the Race Card Instead of the Facts Is Shameful! (Full un-cut version)

Editor,

Quite obviously, Cassandra Smith did not see the same memorial services for Coretta Scott King as Ms. Wheeler and I.

As a Native American and a carrier of the sickle cell anemia trait (my great-grandmother was black), I was appalled by the disrespect shown to our president by many of the speakers who took advantage of King’s services to promote their own agendas.

The way many in attendance stood and cheered at that disrespect as if they were at a political rally was disgusting!

For Smith to say, “I believe the very fact President Bush was there speaks volumes for African Americans in this country” was indeed an unfortunate choice of words; the only thing it said was African Americans can behave just as inappropriately as any other culture.

However, it does say a lot about the president.

He knew he would be criticized and disrespected, but he was man enough to go anyway because he’s a good man and wanted to show his respect for King. Had he not been there, some in the African-American community would have berated him and called him a racist.

Smith keeps going back to Katrina and “the treatment of many African Americans” as if there was some sort of conspiracy perpetrated against them by white folks. If this were true, why do you suppose so many white people went down there to save them and help them?

He--, they even went back into those areas and saved their dogs! It’s a fact most of the volunteers are white; that the majority of those contributing money and supplies were white; and that the majority of tax money spent was paid by whites, not just because they make up the largest population but because they care.

After all, it was good, white people who formed the Republican Party for the express purpose of ending slavery, and they did that on the backs of thousands of white men! To even imply the Bush administration would purposely delay help is shameful!

President Bush has more blacks and other minorities in his Cabinet and in executive positions in his administration than any president before him; more blacks are home owners than ever before, because of tax cuts, thousands more, many of whom are black folks, now enjoy a tax exempt status and it's a fact that African American couples make the same money as white couples.

Why does she refer to the President as "emperor"? Does she, like so many others, have a problem with another race of people being free?  Not only does Ms. Smith demonstrate more of an interest in confrontation rather than fact neither does she give white americans enough credit.

Put politics on the back burner until our troops come home

Editor,

I wanted to ask the Bush bashers a question. When everything happened on 9-11, what was our president to do? No matter what or how he responded, he was going to be wrong.

He has done a great job. Can you imagine the pressure he has been under? Do the Bush bashers ever think about how he feels every night before he goes to bed thinking about what family will lose a loved one next in Iraq or Afghanistan?

It only proves one thing: Politics take priority over everything else! For every person who thinks we should not have went to Iraq, what about the innocent little girls Saddam’s sons were raping and murdering? WMDs, we know he had them; he used them against his own people

I say let’s do this for a change: Put politics on the back burner until our troops come home. Let’s show our men and women in uniform how much we appreciate what they are doing.

I think President Bush is doing the best he can right now, do I think he could do better at some? Yes, I do.

It amazes me former President Carter could criticize Bush, or Al Gore criticizing him in Saudi Arabia, or some wannabe like Howard Dean saying the things that he says. These men are simply placing politics in front of supporting the troops.

I’m not asking you to vote for Bush, or like everything he does; I don’t either!

But on Iraq, Afghanistan and the war on terror, I do support him and pray for him because every American life that is lost in this war he has to live with it for the rest of his life. Can you imagine having that on your shoulders?

If you’re going to bash me for this letter, think about why you’re bashing me and our president!

Wayne Simmons

Copy of letter Vice Chairman Butler sent to the local paper in response to their editorial: Why aren’t we taking care of Iran?

“And we’ll be the first to applaud him for ridding the world of a true menace.”

Coming from the Journal editorial board, there‘s only two words for that statement!

It’s not surprising to anyone how liberals will hold their own pedantic sanctimony to such high standards while dismissing the relevancy of all the basic facts that constitute the totality of an issue.

Iraq had a proven track record of hating America and any free country, especially those friendly to the United States (remember the Iraq invasion of Kuwait?)

What’s so ‘gung-ho’ about waiting years to finally take action against one of the world’s most historically lethal destroyers of human life with chemical and biological weapons while he consistently violated multiple useless United Nations resolutions (17 to be exact)?

All of them were direct violations of the cease-fire agreement he signed that liberals used to force the end of the Gulf War.

Now they charge President Bush with being a ‘cowboy’ and a ‘terrorist’ because he didn’t follow the Chief of the IAEA El-Baradei’s ‘suggestion’ that we should wait longer to invade Iraq to give the U.N. inspectors even ‘more time’ after years of dragging their feet through 17 meaningless resolutions.

Yet, now they say they'll applaud the ‘terrorist cowboy’ if he dismisses El-Baradei, Russia, and China's reluctance so far to even support the ‘suggestion’ that Iran’s nuclear ambitions should be referred to the U.N. Security Council and just “wipe Iran off the face of the earth with true ‘shock and awe’"?

Right.

Ignoring the years long obfuscation of world leaders, then chastising the President for finally removing Saddam from power, is just as fallacious as liberals saying they’d be just ‘hunky-dory’ with an actual unilateral American invasion of Iran without the stamp of approval from their beloved United Nations.

Talk about ‘false prophets‘.

Lee P Butler

Sometimes a response is necessary, especially when comments that have been made are mostly false in nature and condescendingly hypocritical.

Mr. Goodwin wrote that he was ‘angered’ by what he had read in the paper. Why would a person defending Christians’ right to say Merry Christmas during, well, Christmas and that no salutation should be omitted from use at businesses in the public sector anger Wayne so much that the Sunday school teacher decided he had to start casting stones?

Liberals 'find fault with what is being done and to attack what isn’t'

Let me get this straight. The Great Liberal Bastion of Richmond County, that is the Daily Journal, says “the best thing the United States could do in the face of new terrorist threats is to assure Americans that we will be able to respond with swiftness to any emergency.”

Typical of the liberal bent to not have a plan to attempt to stop a terrorist attack, to find fault with what is being done and to attack what isn’t.

You would rather we sit back and await our fate. Your remarks, Mr. Editor, are exactly why Democrats are not the majority in Congress; because you are weak on national security.

You would rather stir the populous up about our government listening to their conversations — which they ain’t, not unless you’re talking to a known terrorist or his operatives!

It’s quite amusing to think that, deep in the dark crevices of the intelligence community, someone is actually interested in listening to you talk to “The Princess” or “The Boy Child;” Bacon talking with his “Lovely Bride;” or Miss Kimberly talking to her many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and their friends she is so fond of writing about.

Concerning Katrina, we now know 65 percent of those caught in the flood had cars they could have left the area in. So the blame must fall at their feet first.

The mayor of New Orleans never followed his own disaster evacuation plans. He never used his school buses to get the sick and most vulnerable out first — and they had a list of them. The governor of Louisiana had to be begged to declare a disaster!

Vote for person, party who believe what you believe

Editor,

Cassandra Smith’s letter misunderstands what Theresa Beavers and others have against Wayne Goodwin and the Democratic Party of today.

It is not that one party is more pure and Christian than another for neither party, as secular human organizations, have a corner on morality. The issue is the difference in political philosophies. Does one party’s political philosophy square more closely with our Judeo-Christian values? Before President Franklin Roosevelt it was the Democratic Party.

But after President Roosevelt, the Democratic Party took a decidedly secular and humanistic approach to government that accelerated in the 1960s and through the 1970s so today you have a party that is antithetical toward any Christian morality that is absolute.

Let me give you a litmus test of two issues that divide the two parties.

Christians have for 2,000 years believed in the sanctity of human life and that life begins at conception. Which party has worked to limit the evil practice of abortion? The unborn are the most defenseless of all God’s creatures.

On the economic side of the political spectrum, the Democratic party has practiced the Kensayian policies of the redistribution of wealth. The Democrats began the practice of using tax policy to carry out a social agenda. The more social programs you have the more successful your government is.

I watched Gov. Michael Easley’s interview on PBS the other night and he was euphoric about his accomplishments in creating more government programs. He did not mention that early last year North Carolina was $1 billion in debt and that all the fees and taxes that were raised last year were going to pay for these programs ad infinitum.

Is that really a Christian ethic to create dependency?

To be fair, I must say there are some liberal Republicans who are more closely aligned with Democrats. But as a Christian, and Mrs. Beavers made this clear, one should vote for the person and party most closely in agreement with their Christian values.

Rev. David Frierson

Democrats should Match Religious Belief To Political

Editor,

I guess once again the local Democrats from Richmond County want us to believe they somehow are different then those baby-killing liberals in Hollywood — not like their friends, Martin Sheen, who they had visit them at their campaign rally here.

How can they not be like them when you support their same agenda?

People I talk to seemed shocked that gay organizations supported them in the last election. You can find it on the Internet.

Being a Sunday school teacher doesn’t make you a Christian; neither does sitting in the garage make you a car. When I was growing up, my Sunday school teachers didn’t support abortion on demand, support gay rights and other liberal views that our beloved local Democrats apparently do since they are proud to be called a Democrat whose party’s platform includes these un-Sunday-school-like behaviors. That is, unless you go to one of those churches that are now allowing ministers to be homosexual and still keep their pulpit.

Let’s open our eyes. If you vote Democrat in all the elections, find out what your party stands for. Don’t just assume you are one thing and the liberals are another.

Times have changed. Platforms have changed.

Find out what you believe and see if you vote for people who believe like you. Name recognition is nothing if you don’t have a good value system.

Teressa Beavers

Goodwin's attack also seeks to quiet minority

Talk about nasty!

Wayne Goodwin’s attack of Lee Butler is typical of liberal tactics when there is no defense of their positions. I’d like to remind Mr. Goodwin that as Christians, it’s not Mr. Butler who runs to the polling place and votes to support abortion on demand, gay marriage and the removal of God from public places.

Now our fine state Democrats — including Mr. Goodwin’s wife, our representative who supported it — have raised our gas taxes by another three cents a gallon, making North Carolina one of six states with the highest gas tax!

It was the Republicans who voted against that increase!

Finally, Mr. Goodwin’s call for the Daily Journal to suppress the voice of the minority, we conservatives, is indeed un-American and stinks of elitism!

Quite obviously he has a problem with the liberal agenda being criticized more than once a month. If the Daily Journal had a single conservative voice, which it doesn’t, on its editorial staff, then a few of us wouldn’t feel compelled tocounter the newspaper’s spin so often.

All one needs to do is go back and read the editorials since the president was first elected and count the negative attacks on him, his administration and his policies and then compare them to the positive to know where the Daily Journal stands. We are lucky the Daily Journal even prints our responses, but controversy does sell papers.

I saw nothing nasty in Mr. Butler’s letter. He was merely responding to another who used the words Mr. Goodwin found so offensive. Quite frankly, Mr. Goodwin was indeed petty.

Bush trying to keep Americans safe

Editor,

Kudos to Barbara Jackson for her letter supporting the surveillance actions taken by President Bush against those suspected of planning to do harm to America.

There was no mention in the Daily Journal’s commentary, “Bush needs to follow letter of the law,” that President Clinton also monitored private telephone conversations and on a large scale basis. Among the wire-tapping cases was the well-documented one in which Clinton allowed warrantless FBI agents to break into the home of CIA veteran Aldrich Ames and install listening devices.

This action was very successful:. Ames was caught. He pleaded guilty to espionage and was sentenced by the courts.

If it had not been for Clinton’s action, Ames would have gone on for years putting the lives of government officials in danger by releasing classified information to the enemy.

The surveillance strategy used by Clinton and Bush was designed for those who are suspected of conspiring with foreign governments or terrorists to injure or kill Americans. Mainstream Americans will not have their privacy invaded.

I am appalled the media would disclose to the enemy a war plan that is being used to keep Americans safe.

Kudos to Butler; pray for Lockitch

Editor,

In reference to the letter by Keith Lockitch and the other by Lee P. Butler, I say hooray for Lee Butler and we need to pray for Mr. Lockitch.

As for the controversy over “Happy Holidays,” Christ is the reason for this season. It is his birthday, so “Merry Christmas” is most appropriate.

While I am writing this, I offer thanks to Sara Lee for hosting the senior Christmas party and providing all for it. They are wonderful people, and I wish them all success in all of their endeavors.

Local paper is mouthpiece of the Democratic Party

What in the devil is the politically correct way when it comes to protecting our citizens and tracking our enemies?

You say “protection methods under the guise of national security.” Well, what else can it be if not national security?

So, the president used his authority 30 times to listen to overseas phone calls — all relating to known terrorist. I don’t see a problem!

The problem is, who leaked this highly classified information to The New York Times in the first place — information that The Times has had for more than a year.

The Times was asked by the White House at that time not to disclose the information. Well, who told the newspaper? While the Democrats screamed and cried for an investigation over who leaked Valerie Plame’s name to the press and while they’ve called for an investigation into the whether the president used his powers overzealously, they get that deer-in-the-headlight look when there is talk of investigating this leak.

And there will be an investigation. Why did The Times decide to print that story now? It’s simple.

When the Iraqi elections went off successfully, the Democrats realized they couldn’t say things that were perceived as negative. But they had to have something to beat the president with, and since The New York Times is the mouthpiece (as is the Daily Journal) of the Democratic Party, now was the perfect time to reveal this secret program, crying our civil liberties have been compromised.

Now Democrats want to cripple our intelligence-gathering methods again as they did during the Clinton years by not renewing the Patriot Act. Fifty million people are free from oppression and torture; democracy is spreading through the Middle East.

Why can’t Democrats revel in

their part in this? Again it’s simple — because of their hatred for George Bush!

Barbara L. Jackson

American troops in Iraq as missionaries for Jesus?

Liberals say they support the troops, but not the job that our military personnel are trained for.

They say they supported the ousting of Saddam Hussein when it involved the issue of WMD, yet can’t support Operation Enduring Freedom now that it is concentrated on creating freedom and democracy in Iraq.

They seem to enjoy the “holiday season” and its perks, but not if you include all that rhetoric about “the birth of Jesus being the reason for the season.” They go on tirades about Wal-Mart destroying America, but shop there anyway because they can best afford to feed and clothe their children there.

Plus, the world’s largest employer has made it possible for Santa to be able to visit millions more children who otherwise would have gotten few if any presents on Christmas morning — excluding this year, with all those sold-out XBox 360s no one should be able to afford in this terrible economy we keep being told exists.

And these liberals assure us Christians, who make up more than 85 percent of the American population, are shoving their views down everyone’s throats by saying “Merry Christmas,” while they — and their secular brethren — are desperately trying to remove the mention of Christ from the holiday, but that’s simply “showing compassion for religious diversity?”

That’s why I’m just a mean-spirited, close-minded troop-supporting believer in their mission to provide freedom and democracy for everyone, even in Iraq, who celebrates the birth of Jesus while also buying gifts at the store liberals love to hate even though they shop there, too, where no salutation should be omitted or considered divisive or polarizing.

Remember to say a prayer for our troops who are spreading the philosophy of Jesus — liberty — on his special day as I shove my wish of a Merry Christmas down your throats!

Why do apathetic folks get so fired up about dump?
Editor,

I don’t understand all the uproar about the trash dump. After all, we already have one — along our streets and roads and we don’t even get paid for it!

I’m all for those millions of dollars. Then perhaps we would have more funds to do something about real problems such as illegitimate births, lower achievement scores, drugs, crime and maybe have some left to clean up our nasty roads.

It amazes me that our citizens get so excited about a dump and school uniforms and seem to be so accepting of these other problems.

Don’t let political meddling end progress in Iraq

Bill Clinton announced that Operation Iraqi Freedom was “a big mistake.”

Democratic Congressman Jack Murtha said our military “cannot accomplish anything further in Iraq.”

Sen. Ted Kennedy calls Iraq “Vietnam.”

Sen. John Kerry said our troops’ presence on the ground in Iraq just “feeds the insurgency.”

On CNN, Soledad O’Brien was obviously incensed about Sen. Joe Lieberman’s positive outlook on Iraq when she asked, “You’ve made four visits to Iraq over the last 18 months. You sound encouraged upon your return. Why?”

Lieberman responded plainly saying, “I saw progress economically, militarily, and politically. I mean, some of the kind of practical common interest stuff that I saw was just more cars on the streets in Baghdad and the other cities I was in, almost every roof seems to have a satellite dish.

“The economy is beginning to move. Politically there’s a full-fledged campaign going on in Iraq now for the national assembly elections in December, and there’s an independent — a large number of independent televisions and newspapers covering it.

“Militarily, the Iraqis are beginning to show much more self-sufficiency. They’re a long way from being able to take it on their own and that’s why we have to be careful not to withdraw too soon, but progress really is being made.”

Why point to the words of Lieberman?

He is only one of a few Democrat leaders who doesn’t think our troops are causing the problem or are losing the war in a modern-day Vietnam. He is in a Democrat minority that sees progress towards democracy for the Iraqi people.

There are courageous military and civilian personnel from Richmond County in Iraq fighting, training, building and striving for a democratic Iraq. Political meddling as it was in Vietnam shouldn’t allow their hard work to end in vain.

Unwed teen mothers know better, but do it any way

By Barbara Leviner Jackson/Letter to the Editor

Of the 139 new mothers between the ages of 15 and 19, how many were under the age of consent, and of those, how many of the fathers were over the age of consent, and of those cases, how many were referred to the Sheriff’s Office for investigation of criminality?

The article in the paper did not mention pregnancy in children below the age of 15. Were there any? The fact that 59 percent of the babies born in Richmond County are illegitimate is shameful!

The harm being done to many of these babies will be irreversible — the poverty, the lack of consistent contact with the father, low achievement scores, higher criminality.

And the worst part is that most of these ladies who allow themselves to become pregnant when there is so much birth control available to them know right from wrong.

Many know they can’t afford a child and that they may not have the education they need, but they go right on and allow themselves to get pregnant — quite obviously caught up in the moment and not strong enough to say “NO I’m not prepared.”

And what of the taxpayer? How much longer will we continue to be overtaxed to pay for others’ irresponsibility?

Liberals trying to get rid of pledge

I think Mr. Shutt has made a good point in his letter concerning prayerin school. I was born in 1963, so I guess everything wasn’t toobad for the country.

We can’t go back and undo history, but we canchange what is happening today. We can support legislation that willreinstate those freedoms that we have lost. Every time I say the Pledgeof Allegiance at the schools where I work, I thank God in my heart thatwe still have that freedom.

What is happening — starting with thatparent in California who doesn’t want his child to say the pledge — is amove to take the “God” out of the Pledge and probably the pledge alltogether. Are we going to just sit back as a silent majority and letthat happen?

Where were the conservative Christians when Ms. O’Hare began her quest to get prayer taken out of school?

We as voters,Christians, conservatives, or whatever you consider yourself to be,should not let this freedom go without a fight. If we don’t speak up,that’s what will happen.

We need to be more active and not allow furtherdamage to be done to the family values and morals of this country. Weshould all get behind and support our president’s choices for conservative judges who will uphold the values we hold in our heartswhether we voted for him or not.

Whether you consider yourself aconservative elephant, a conservative donkey, or a liberal donkey, weneed to fight for our children’s futures.

Stray law needs to be changed

So I guess all the stray dogs, cats and other animals the citizens of Richmond County have taken in before we even had an animal shelter make us all criminals.

I think the right thing to do when one finds a lost animal is to call the shelter and ask if someone has called looking for it. If not and you are willing to keep it and give it a good home, what kind of crime is that?

I don't understand the logic behind that, being an animal lover. What about the kid's story/movie, "Because of Winn Dixie?" Did that little girl break the law because she gave a homeless dog a home?

When I called the animal control officer this summer to report an abuse case, Mr. Wayne told me most of the dogs he takes to the pound will be put to sleep. Many dogs don't get adopted. Wouldn't it be better to keep a lost animal that wasn't claimed, give it a good home and spare its life?

I am sure most pets adopted are cute little puppies; older dogs are harder to adopt. I think the shelter is a beautiful facility, and I commend all who work there -- but giving a lost animal a good home should not be a crime.

Finding strays and giving them homes is part of human goodness and compassion. Why should that be a crime?

I tell you what a crime is: when certain citizens of Richmond County tie animals on a chain/rope and refuse to feed and take care of them.

The pound is doing good work, but this law should be changed.

How naive can you be?

So you still think there are no WMD's do you? Just how naive can you be for goodness sakes? Pray tell me what those helicopters were shot down with? Air rifles, BB guns, sling shots? Where are the insurgents getting the explosives to make the car bombs? While President Bush was quibbling with the U.N., Saddam had plenty of time to move them. Where? Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, in holes in the ground like he was. I'll bet the farm they weren't destroyed. Another question I'd like to ask you, just what should he have done after 9-11? You seem to have all the answers. You know exactly what's wrong and how to fix it, at least according to your editorials lately.

I happen to think George W. Bush is the right man in the right place at this time in history. There was another president 140 years ago who couldn't do anything right either. But he stuck to his guns and as a result, this is still the United States. Another thing about our "so-called allies" who think so much more of China than they do of America. My honest opinion of that is, I don't give a whoop-di-do what they think because I don't think much of them either. If Germany and France are our friends, who needs enemies? The can have China. I'll keep America. We have our faults, plenty of them. But, I don't want to live anyplace else. Not even in Buckingham Palace. If you lived in China, I'll bet you wouldn't write such mean, vindictive things about what's-his-name. If you did, somebody would kick your door down and haul you off before a firing squad.

I hate war and I cried when I saw those Marines lying dead when so many children are killed with bombs planted by cowardly people. But, I think the president is right and he'll be vindicated. You keep track of who is killed in Iraq. What about the people who are killed on our highways by drunk drivers, with no license, no insurance? Now there is a crusade for you. Why don't you try it? You'll probably be hearing from me again because I can't keep my big mouth shut sometimes.

Democrats would filibuster Christ as high court nominee

I commend Jack Martin for his suggestion to open our southern border only to Hispanics who are qualified and willing to enlist in U.S. military service.

It's a great idea; however, the ACLU would never allow it.

As a Bible-thumper, I found Martin's remarks on this subject very interesting. His fear of a faith-based government is unfounded. In 1963, Madalyn O'Hair enlightened America to the fact God has no place in government, and that the history of our founding fathers should be deleted because they had it all wrong.

John Jay, our first Supreme Court justice, had no clue just how politically incorrect he was when he said, "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers. And it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of a Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers."

Thomas Jefferson never realized that he mistaken when he said, "The Bible is the cornerstone of liberty. A student's perusal of the sacred volume will make him a better citizen, a better father, a better husband."

Martin can lay aside his fears. Even if Jesus Christ were to make himself available, President Bush could not appoint him.

He would be filibustered by Democrats because of his politically incorrect beliefs - you know, all that nonsense about not committing adultery, lying, cheating and loving your neighbor enough to defend him against injustices.

Hayes' vote will be good for N.C.

I applaud Rep. Robin Hayes for voting in favor of the Central American Free Trade Agreement.

Obviously, he received a great deal of grief for his last-minute decision allowing the bill to pass. Sadly, however, such criticism is purely out of a misunderstanding of the benefits offered by free trade.

Numerous economic studies have repeatedly shown that free trade is ultimately beneficial to the countries involved. CAFTA will open new markets to U.S. products, while also creating lower costs for imported products.

Because of the leverage Hayes received in return for his vote, the textile industry also will receive added benefits through stricter controls on imported Chinese products.

Because of improved economies and more jobs in Central America, North Carolina also may look forward to a smaller population of illegal immigrants, who look to the U.S. for jobs that are unavailable in their countries.

Most importantly, however, are the opportunities for progress that free trade has in store for North Carolina.

Eighty years ago, North Carolina - and the South as a whole - feared the change that accompanied the rise of textile mills in our region. Drawn by the security of a steady paycheck and an opportunity to escape sharecropping, people moved from their farms and into the mill villages that are a signature of our culture.

While residents feared this change, progress took place and the South escaped a form of agriculture that had debilitated its people for years.

Each time a plant closes in North Carolina to move overseas, it offers the same opportunity for progress. With improvements in existing government programs that offer assistance to individuals and towns affected by plant closings, people have a unique opportunity to improve their lives and our state.

I am thankful Hayes took this opportunity to improve the lives of the people of the 8th District, and he deserves our continued support.

 Hayes made the right decision

By Billy Moss/Letter to the Editor

I would like to respond to your recent editorial attack on U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes.

He did change his vote on CAFTA, which is certainly accurate, but for you to not only question his integrity but his intelligence is beyond fair play. Do you honestly think our congressman would intentionally do anything that would hurt our district?

I'm sure it was a difficult decision for him to change his vote, but I feel very confident he believes he can get more for our district that will help us than what CAFTA would do to hurt us.

I also was shocked when the Richmond County Daily Journal endorsed Robin Hayes because there is no secret to what side of the pendulum that the newspaper swings.

Thank you for allowing me to voice my opinion.

It's the Senate, not president, acting like a divide

Your Aug. 3 "Hail to the king, er, the chief" editorial implies President Bush is a divider because of his recess appointment of John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations.

This all depends on how you look at it.

Could it be that those who oppose Bolton are the dividers? Bolton had the approval of the majority of the Senate and would have been voted into the position if the few who had personal agendas had not stalled the voting. Contrary to your remarks, those who block voting are interfering with the will of the people, not George Bush.

He was forced to take action to ensure the will of the people.

The president should be applauded for his appointment of Mr. Bolton, who is a no-nonsense diplomat with the skills that could reform this corrupt organization. Those who find him too aggressive would, most likely, find the late Captain Kangaroo too aggressive as well.

Recess appointments are not as seldom used as you implied. During Bill Clinton's two terms he made 140 recess appointments. Among them were homosexual activist James Hormel as ambassador to Luxembourg.

In August 2000, Mr. Clinton, made 17 recess appointments without advance notice, which outraged officials.

Truman, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Bush I, Ronald Reagan and George Washington all made recess appointments. Reagan was the champion with 243 recess appointments and Clinton came in second.

The Constitution allows recess appointments in cases of emergency. The obstructionists in the Senate created an emergency for the president by not allowing the majority to vote.

Your remarks comparing George Bush to a monarch and King George were nothing short of political chicanery.

I can tell by your recent editorials that Election 2008 is well under way.

Will federal judges continue as kings?

By Jay W. Shutt/Letter to the Editor

A trip through our nation's capitol is a powerful reminder that this nation was founded by Christians upon Christian principles, and that we were endowed with certain unalienable rights by our Creator.

Unelected judges have no right to reinterpret our Constitution according to their own whims and violate these rights.

Congress needs to exercise its power under the Constitution to bring down the "kingship" of some federal judges.

Congress has the constitutional power to close any federal court lower than the Supreme Court and the right to impeach any federal judge including those on the Supreme Court.

Federal judges in the last 45 years have violated the original intent of the Constitution by:

1. Legalizing abortion;

2. Taking the Bible and prayer out of public schools;

3. Taking the Ten Commandments out of public areas;

4. Overturning state laws against sodomy;

5. Allowing pornography to flourish; and

6. Allowing homosexual marriages to take place.

For starters, Congress needs to pass the Constitution Restoration Act (H.R. 3799 and S. 2323), which will force Congress to take action against these out of control justices. If these justices are not stopped, we will no longer have the Christian nation that God has blessed over the years and for which much blood has been shed.

Write, call or e-mail Rep. Robin Hayes and Sens. Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr encouraging them to support the Constitution Restoration Act. Pray fervently for America!

Fletcher just doing what's right

By Teressa Beavers/Letter to the Editor

In response to Tuesday's editorial concerning the state superintendent's race, I totally disagree with the comparison to John Kerry and the president's situation in November.

I am an educator and a Republican and do believe we are in need of a state superintendent of schools; however, Tricia Willoby has done a great job filling in for this office this past year. I receive regular e-mails on her list serve. She has kept teachers abreast of what is new in the state.

She has overspent her term - that I agree with.

If out-of-district provisional ballots are not allowed in our wonderful state, then they should not be counted. If Bill Fletcher was a Democrat, I am sure the Democrats would be fighting it to the last minute, too.

What about the Steve Troxler race and President Bush in Florida? John Kerry knew it wasn't worth fighting for in Ohio.

We must follow the law. The legislators in power can't create new laws to follow their agenda, which is what has happened. The "new" legislature being predominantly Democrat created new laws to favor June Atkinson.

Bill Fletcher is doing the right thing. After all, when was the last time we had a Republican superintendent? We need some reform in this state.

He stands to lose more than just a political race if he just gives up. It's not that Bill Fletcher needs to learn any lessons; he is just trying to stand up for what the law says, and possibly gain the seat that could be his.

Flag-burning amendment to Constitution is 'sorely needed'

Editor,

I disagree with Tom MacCallum about the flag, it should NOT be up to individual states to decide. It should be a federal decision.

An amendment to the Constitution is sorely needed. The last vote by the Senate was 63 for an amendment, and since that time Republicans have gained enough seats that the amendment would probably pass, especially since 9/11.

President Bush will immediately sign it and the process of ratification can then begin.

Desecration is pretty spelled out in the House version. You cannot exactly forbid burning of the flag, because that is how old and damaged flags are done away with. I urge all you interested voters to contact your Senators and demand a yes vote on the upcoming Senate version.

Bush should use recess appointment

By Charles K. Williams/Letter to the Editor

As President Reagan used to say, "There you go again."

You are right on the money. This is not a dictatorship, but a system in which one political party is voted into office and steers the direction of the country because that is what its constituents want.

What this nation needs at this time IS an iron-fisted ambassador to the United Nations whose firm actions would boost the esteem and prestige of our United States and maybe help straighten out a corrupt organization.

I encourage President Bush to use a recess appointment as this would allow those 38 lackeys of the Democratic Party to see just how wrong their thinking (and yours) is.

Gitmo isn't going anywhere

By Barbara L. Jackson/Letter to the Editor

By the by, Kellogg, Brown and Root just received a new multi-million dollar contract to build a new prison at Gitmo! So, it's not going anywhere! Get over it.

Additionally, polls show the American people do not want to close Gitmo; they do not believe the prisoners are being tortured and basically could care less about them.

Finally, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin's comments are being played over and over on Arab TV, much to our detriment, and certainly to his as he will surely lose his Senate seat upon the next election!

And that makes Mrs. Jackson very happy!

Reader on Wal-Mart: 'Build it and they will come'

By Jerry L. Moss/Letter to the Editor

It's good to see the new Wal-Mart Supercenter nearing completion along with the rest of the shopping center complex.

Unfortunately, I hear some talk about the woes of what's going to happen to the rest of the county's shopping and eating avenues; things like, "Well, Wal-Mart is going to put some of the grocery stores out of business" or "Richmond County won't support all the new restaurants coming."

I like shopping at supercenters for retail items and will buy some grocery items from them, but I (like many I talk to) prefer a designated grocery store (and its location) for that type of shopping. Some say Wal-Marts hurt towns, but for me they've drawn me to places I'd have never gone to otherwise like Biscoe.

I've found other things of interest in surrounding areas because of the magnetic Wal-Mart draw. As far as the restaurant issues, we must realize people from neighboring towns and travelers are in Richmond County every day.

They, along with locals, cause the restaurant economy to thrive.

I'm delighted about Fire Mountain Grill, Andy's, Fatz Cafe' (try the one in Florence, S.C.; been there 3 times with the wife - and we love it) and the other unannounced eateries coming.

The new road infrastructures, airport expansion, and migrating industries to our area are encouraging. To borrow from Kevin Costner, "Build it and they will come" is the optimism we as community should dwell upon.

It will be interesting to see what the future brings. Remember the pessimism of its people brings stagnation to a community, but optimism in turn brings new hope and prosperity to that which would've withered away.

Bacon should tour Morrison to see how inmates behave

So, once again our liberal Daily Journal could not resist raking our fine military through the muck! You, with the bully pulpit that could say something to honor our troops at Gitmo; instead, Mr. Bacon again chose to dip his liberal pin into the debasement of our military and government.

Never once did he mention we treat prisoners better than any country! It was our troops who lovingly laid those Qurans in our enemies hands when they arrived at Gitmo! The prisoners are well fed; they're given excellent medical care; and of course, allowed to pray five times a day.

Mr. Bacon said not a word of what our troops have endured in dealing with these prisoners. Our troops have been spit on; they've had urine thrown on them; they've been verbally and physically assaulted - all, not for money, but to protect citizens such as Mr. Bacon so he can demonstrate his empathy for the enemy while slinging his insulting slurs at our troops.

Apparently, Mr. Bacon really doesn't understand. When the president said Amnesty International (an anti-American group at best) had based its decisions on the word of people who had been in detention, that was true! They did not talk to the military staff at Gitmo; they only talked to former prisoners! Perhaps a tour of Morrison Institution in Hoffman would give Mr. Bacon a little more insight on just how inmates are!

I find it quite daunting Mr. Bacon would believe a bunch of murderers who regal in our slaughter over the fine young men and women who volunteer to protect America and certainly most of the world!

I personally am all for closing Gitmo and sending all the prisoners to Russia, where certainly they would be given the respect they warrant.

Don't just rely on the media; check out the facts for yourself

By Jane Moss/Letter to the Editor Thursday, June 2, 2005 12:10 AM EDT

I read with great interest your editorial about embryonic stem cell research - such interest I decided to do some research on my own.

My findings were very informative - things our media generally won't report.

Griffith University has found adult stem cells isolated from the the nose have the ability to develop into many different cell types in the right environment. This breakthrough from Australia was largely ignored by the U.S. media. Scientists have grown nerve cells, glial cells (multi-branched nerve cells), liver cells, heart cells and muscle cells all from the human nose.

Also, unlike embryonic stem cells, which reportedly can trigger tumors at the point of injection, adult stem cells grow in a controlled fashion and don't revert to their original tissue form. Another significant benefit is because the cells come from the patient himself there is no risk of his body rejecting them.

Placenta research at the Children's Hospital Boston and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is finding some very interesting results. Cells from the afterbirth appear to generate more blood stem cells and can give rise to a complete blood system when transplanted into an adult. This could lead to breakthrough cures for leukemia and other blood diseases.

I also found where cord blood was used in the treatment of both sickle cell disease and leukemia.

All I ask is that people dig deeper than what the media reports. Always find out for yourselves. There are many other positive things going on regarding medical breakthroughs without using embryonic research.

Science can be good, but science also can be sinister and dark. Remember Hitler's labs in the 1940s.

I stand with President Bush on his potential veto. I know those cures are out there. Tremendous progress is being made with adult stem cells, placenta and cord blood.

I don't think Mr.Hayes is worried.

Does Graham intend to dance with McCain in the 2008 ball?

By Bunn T. Phillips Jr./Letter to the Editor,

Wednesday, May 25, 2005

Sen. Lindsey Graham's (R-S.C.) latest break with the leadership of his party over the continuing filibuster debacle raises questions about his future plans.

His latest ploy makes it quite obvious that, like another (former) senator named John Edwards (D-N.C.), he seems more interested in developing a national constituency, than in currying favor with those who brought him to the dance. Several years ago he appeared on stage with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) at a local rally for Rep. Robin Hayes.

While jealously clinging to a conservative philosophy, he nevertheless appears more compatible with the McCain wing of the party.

Could it be that the affable senator aspires to a spot on a national ticket, should McCain be successful in becoming his party's standard bearer in 2008?

Democratic planks go against what Christians stand for

By Billy Cipriani/Letter to the Editor Friday, May 20, 2005

Lee Butler couldn't have said it better. I propose the new name, "Richmond County Democratic Journal."

I get tired of hearing this war dubbed "unjustified" by some group of left-wing liberals who know no more about what is going on in Iraq than I do about cold fusion. I challenge you to get your boots dirty and then come back and report, and quit taking CNN as gospel.

As far as the issue with the preacher in the mountains, let's talk.

I am sure that, at best, it is close to accurate, but it does raise a good topic. There is a major contradiction in the beliefs of a professed Christian and a good part of the beliefs of the Democratic platform. Things such as abortion, homosexuality, and gambling are not only wrong in my opinion, but an abomination in the eyes of God.

How can you vote against your beliefs? Understand who and what you represent. When you sit down in front of your television this evening and say to yourself, "what is this world coming to," think of how you spent your vote and how they are representing you.

You cannot legislate morality, but you can legislate against immorality.

And the lottery, hah! Why piddle in small change? As long as values and morals are compromised, aim for the sky. I think legalized prostitution would yield far better than the lottery. As long as it benefits the children, right?

I know it seems petty, but small chips at the foundation of values lead to a collapse in everything we as Christians stand for. As cliché as it sounds, look at the path of the world in the last 10-15 years.

I challenge all Republicans and Democrats to re-evaluate your political affiliation and the way you vote. Know what your party represents and be active.

Oh yeah, the days of the Dixiecrats are long gone.

Opinionated editorials should be fair and balanced

By Bonnie Wheeler/Letter to the Editor Friday, May 20, 2005

I read with interest your commentary, "The pot calling the kettle black."

I would like to offer a suggestion: Give both sides of the issue when writing an opinionated editorial. Otherwise it isn't fair and balanced.

President Bush went to war with Iraq because he believed there were WMDs. Along with the president there were the Democrats from the former administration who believed this, including Bill Clinton who tried to go after Saddam and failed.

Howard Dean (although he seems to have forgotten) wrote a letter to Clinton July 19, 1995, urging him to take action.

Democratic Sens. Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry and others, sent this letter to Clinton Oct. 9, 1998: "We urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."

Were they all lying? I don't think so.

I believe they could have been mistaken (or maybe not). No weapons were found but that does not mean they were not there. You, also, forgot to mention other reasons the president gave for going to war:

On Oct. 7, 2002, the president said, "Saddam has tried to dominate the Middle East, has invaded and brutally occupied a small neighbor, has struck other nations without warning, and holds an unrelenting hostility toward the United States."

The president also said some al-Qaeda leaders who fled Afghanistan went to Iraq and received medical treatment including Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was in command of the suicide bombers.

This alone was a valid reason for going to war.

Newsweek, like CBS, is so angry about the election they are grasping at anything to discredit the president. I am appalled they would risk the lives of those who are fighting to defend freedom.

Stereotype the media is asserting doesn't exist

 5-20-2005

Four front page stories, one editorial and at least another article published by the Journal about a minister who has nothing to do with Richmond County other than a perceived opportunity by the editorial staff to attack Republicans over an issue of uncorroborated hearsay.

During this time, Vice President Cheney’s exoneration over the legally protected right of his office’s position to retain the confidentiality of his energy task force meetings and news that the economy had added 100,000 more jobs last month than economists predicted were both relegated to small articles several pages into the paper.

Plus, the Journal obviously rejected an editorial submitted by the Richmond County GOP about the lottery issue that didn’t mesh with the stated position of the paper. In that article the RCGOP wondered if legislators would cut school construction revenue from the budget replacing, it with lottery funds if it is ever ratified.

We now know that Senate Republican debate was shut down by Democrats who eliminated school construction funding from the proposed budget while those same Democrats promised to allocate more school construction funding in the future using non-existent lottery funds!

Sounds like a hard hitting front page expose‘? Nah, it makes state Democrats look bad, but that preacher, now he’s a bad dude!

Almost every week since the election, our locally elected state representative has gotten free political publicity as she reports on legislation state lawmakers are considering that she wrote, signed on to, or supports without any opposition response. But mostly, she’s just reporting news the Journal should be providing themselves.

At least Republican voices are allowed in the ‘letters to the editor’ section occasionally, to help balance out that whole ‘liberal bias’ stereotype the media keeps asserting doesn’t exist and doesn’t understand from where it originates.

God bless America.

Don't cast aspersions against Wilson, Prayer Day supporters

Letter to the Editor from Mr. Bunn T. Phillips:

Wednesday, May 11, 2005

Editor,

Jack Martin's May 6 letter, ("Rockingham resident takes exception with Prayer Day site") states, "It ain't easy going against the flow, but somebody has to do it. Besides, these purveyors of the faith didn't even bother to say please or excuse me. ... No one has the right to use my property without permission."

Perhaps Mr. Martin should review the First Amendment, which assures all citizens of the right to peaceably assemble. As law-abiding citizens, what more likely site could be chosen than the premises of the people's house of justice?

If memory serves me correctly, one of the notables he singled out, Cathy Wilson (our distinguished clerk of court) was in the forefront of the Prayer Day, but has been involved in a number of community humanitarian efforts for years.

To cast aspersions against this good lady and her followers for breaking no law, while ignoring the spiraling crime and single mother birthrate, in our society is abominable. When I appear before the bar of justice in that Court House in the Sky, I hope I have the likes of those who supported the Prayer Day as my witnesses.
